Content creator, skit maker and videographer,Godstime Gowon, in this interview by Aderonke Adesanya, speaks about his career and his role in the upcoming movie, ‘Elite Academy’.
Why and how did you choose entertainment?
I had the passion and dream to be famous. I love the way celebrities used to be praised just for being famous. Many of them became heroes and they have had the opportunity to meet people they never expected they would meet all because of their content and craft, and this made me very interested.
At what age did you discover your interest for entertainment?
I was 12 years old when I discovered my interest for entertainment and content creation.
What is the best part about being an entertainer?
For me, the best part is becoming famous, people know what I do and I also have the opportunity to earn some money from it. Another benefit is that I’ve been able to travel a lot from it.
How did you come up with your brand name?
I was in primary school when I formed the name “Rulion” and I got it from reading those books with names and meaning. I combined two name to form “Rulion” but it actually has no pre-defined meaning so I gave it a meaning and that is “Red Lion”
Have you faced challenges since you joined the entertainment industry?
Of course, I faced some challenges. When I started, I had no friends to help me shoot my videos and I had to do all the work by myself. I was the videographer, the director, and the editor. I also had to take care of costumes and recording by myself.
Tell me about a time when you were given a large project and how you managed it?
There was a time I had some big content planned and I had no where to accommodate the actors. I had to plead with them to manage a room that I rented and a lot of them had ti sleep on the floor. However, we all slept and woke up in sound health and we were able to shoot the content.
How do you come up with content?
Like I said, I started creating content at the age of 12 but I was just having fun with it. During that time, my elder brother created a channel named “Rulion comedy” and he helped me upload any content I created on it. But as I grew older and wiser, I noticed that there were a lot of things that could be done to make the channel grow but I wanted a clean slate so I created my own channel and named it “Godtime Rulion”.
What can you say about your role in the upcoming movie “ELITE ACADEMY (Dangerous Belles)”?
In the movie, I play the role of IK, a very cool and gentle student that doesn’t disturb nor make noise in class.
What made you take on the role?
I took the role because it’s a movie based on students and also because the producer knew I would be good at it.
Where did you learn your skills as a videographer?
I didn’t learn it anywhere. I’m a natural professional at it and I believe it’s a God-given talent.
How often do you show your work to others and what is your feedback process like?
I take great pride in my work and am always looking for ways to improve. I enjoy showing my work to others, as it helps me to get feedback on how I can make it better.
What was the first project you worked on as a videographer?
As a videographer, I think my friend’s skit was the first I worked on. His stage name is FunnyBoi and this happened earlier in 2022.
What project are you most proud of and why?
What I’m most proud about is the fact that I am already working on my personal projects. It makes me happy because everything in the project ranging from the costume to the materials and the cast have been sourced for and owned by me. It makes me feel like I’m in my own world.
How do you plan for a shoot?
I use about a week or more before the shoot to plan. I inform my actors, the rest of my crew and the leader of the team and get the costume we’re going to be using ready. I also meet with everyone for about 10 hours to brainstorm and prepare.
How well do you handle constructive criticism from others?
Constructive criticism is an important part of growth and I understand that it can be difficult to hear, but I have learned to take it in stride and use it to my advantage. I welcome feedback from others because it helps me identify areas where I need to improve and gives me the opportunity to learn new techniques.
I also strive to make sure that any critiques are taken with a positive attitude and used as motivation to become better at what I do. I’m always open to constructive criticism and believe that it’s essential for improving my skillset and becoming a more successful entertainer.
Who are your role models in the industry?
My role models in Nollywood are BrainJotter, FunnyBross, Mrfunny_1. My role models in Hollywood are Jackie Chan, Cole The Red ranger of the wild force, Spider man And Merlin.
Any upcoming project your fans should anticipate?
Yes. I’m working on making my own movie and it will be released in the coming year. The title is “Rulion” and it will be a magical movie.
